Bird Hot-Spot

Dornwood park is a State of Kansas Bird Hot-Spot with over 120 different species surveyed. A list of the birds spotted through the years can be found here: Birds in Dornwood Park. Contact the Topeka Audubon Society if you would like to get to know more about the birds in Dornwood park. Over 120 species of birds enjoy Dornwood…. you will too!

Located just a few blocks from Lake Shawnee at the southeast corner of 25th Street and Highland Street is Dornwood Park, which preserves 110 acres of mature forest, riparian woodland, and prairie.  These habitats can be sampled along several nature trails.  This is another popular birding area during the peak of spring migration in May, when many species of vireos, thrushes, warblers, tanagers, and sparrows can be seen.  Cooper’s Hawks have nested in the park several times.
